Hi there, I was recently checking my Xorg log files for errors as I noticed the Xorg process being more CPU consuming than the usual. I've found a few lines marked with EE and the note to use this email address to signal the problem. I run openSUSE 11.3 on Intel Core 2 CPU 4300 @ 1.80 GHz with a ATI Radeon HD3850 On this install I tried to use the Open Source radeon driver instead of the proprietary one mainly because I don't need high 3D performances and the proprietary driver interferes with the suspend to RAM or disk. The initial log file is attached as Xorg.0.log.old Line 104 says the module fglrx fails to load. I suspect it would be chosen if present, so I ignored it. Line 404 says: FATAL: RadeonHD presently does not work with kernel modesetting (KMS) Hoping to get some improvements, I reboot adding nomodeset to the kernel boot options. The new log file Xorg.0.log is produced. Now line 404 says: KMS is disabled. This is good for us, because RADEONHD conflicts with KMS Despite this, the performances deteriorate to the point that 1 core of the CPU is constantly busy with the Xorg process. Running glxgears shows choppy movements. See the attached file test.txt for a comparison between the two situations. So... my question is, why is the driver complaining about a setting that, if changed, brings to poorer performances ? I send this more to help improve the driver than to get help, but if you could suggest fixes to better the performances, they would be welcomed. Regards Dario
