The xserver version should be pretty much irrelevant, but you should use the latest drivers for your tests.
I was looking at 'git log' for xf86-video-ati (not radeonhd) after I cloned the repo, and saw 2 commits that led me to believe that after early October it was depending on X server 1.7: 9d59656... 9460ea8... Granted, these are KMS-related -- but I am about to experiment with KMS, as soon as I can get all of the dependencies lined up. Possibly I misunderstood the implication of those commits?
