For plain DVD+RW, look at http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ where there's a kernel patch. It seems to work well, at least with my Sony (read "quirky") DRU-500A. The only drawback of DVD+RW compared to DVD-RAM is disc durability - if you're modifying the content of a disc frequently (eg. a "live" filesystem rather than just for archiving stuff) it'll become unusable very quickly. As for DVD Mount Rainier support, I don't know. Once drives appear that support it (i.e. actually have MRW firmware rather than just being "MRW ready"), I'm sure one or other of the patches (packet-CD, CD-MRW, DVD+RW) will support it fairly quickly.
