But what I understand now is that "lxdm" sets it right, that I should change to "lightdm", and if that works on Isengard, report a bug against lxdm and maybe forget it all.
Huh. "lightdm" sets it right, not "lxdm".
Well, lxdm has code to pass -xauth flag since two years, probably in 0.5.2. lxdm in Leap 42.3 is 0.4.1, which is 6 years old. I suspect this exceeds scope of simple bug report and quite unlikely will be fixed for Leap 42, especially seeing that lxdm is not present in factory ...
I have a virtual machine with 42.3, but it uses lightdm (and DISPLAY is exported, I just looked). I will switch my others machines to it and forget; I already had problems reporting a bug against lxdm recently, I'm not doing it again. I was not aware I had some machines using it. I remember now why: that machine started life not with xfce, but with LXDE, because it is lighter. I abandoned LXDE for XFCE because I found other problems. Sigh. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
