Can an EXT3 filesystem be "converted" to EXT2, IOW, dispense with the journal?
You can disable journal; you cannot make ext2 out of ext4.
Yes.
mke2fs -t ext4 -O ^has_journal /dev/device
That looks destructive. I meant what I wrote, *converted*, dispensing with the journal
tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/device
from what without a journal would be an EXT2 filesystem.
No, it would not.
I have to maintain backward compat here. The STBs here do not all have kernels that know EXT4.
ext4 is a bit more than ext2 + journal.
at format time. I use that on USB sticks. Method as commented on http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manual-en_How_to_install_SystemRescueCd_o...
But I doubt the journal is the reason of your problem.
(I wouldn't be having this space problem if I was able to get rid of the commercials from nearly 2TB of accumulated h264 .ts files. :-( )
