And oddly enough for me, when I moved my mouse and keyboard from the USB ports on my docking station to the ports directly on the laptop, the problem seems to have been fixed too. Chris

Lenovo T520 OpenSuSE 12.2 KDE 4.8.5-2.4.1 Logitech USB mouse, old Trackpad disabled in BIOS Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2520M CPU @ 2.50GHz 3.4.47-2.38-desktop x86_64 kernel Intel HD Graphics 3000
Dell M1330N Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Cinnamon Logitech wireless mouse, same age as laptop (~3yrs) touchpad disabled in desktop (doesn't persist fully across boots) Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5850 @ 2.16GHz 3.2.0-54-generic-pae i686 kernel NVidia GeForce Go 8400
Common factor(s) seems to be: Linux 3.x kernel, not new mouse.
I would bet on a hardware bug, a good share of logitech mice seems to have this problem. I own a logitech performance MX and the left mouse button started misbehaving after a year of usage. Like everyone, I blamed the software at first then began to dig the issue and found numerous reports on the internet about spurious double clicks: none related to linux or a particular software.
Two month ago, I finally landed on the following web site : https://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=594646
I followed the instructions and now the left button clicks as intended. The other solution is to find some omron microswitch and fire up the soldering iron.
Hardware wear is the culprit. Switched mice and the frequency of the problem switched with them. Replaced the wireless mouse and the problem is gone. The wired mouse is much larger, so presumably the spring is larger and deforms slower. I will be replacing the wired mouse soon as I find one that fits my hand as well as this one.
