Another excellent idea -- it's a toss-up between this and what Tim suggested.
Tim's idea is better. If you do the dd thing, you have to remember that you can only do it while the partition is unmounted, otherwise you are going to end up with a corrupt file system on the image (because things are cached in RAM which dd won't know about), so you couldn't do it in the background while you do other things.
