Is it safe to install KDE and Gnome on the same system? Will it break things? What is the best practice.
Why wouldn't it be? What do you imagine the risks or breakage to be?
You can install ALL the Window Managers on a single system if you want. I wouldn't try to log into all of them at the same time though :-)
OK I installed KDE running this command:
sudo zypper install -t pattern kde4 kde4_basis
and now when I log into KDE I don't get plasma workspace. All I get is a white desktop. No Panel nothing.
What configured repos? Were there any errors during the zypper? What version of KDE did you try to install? The default 4.7.2 with 12.1? Factory 4.7.4? Unstable 4.8RC? Did you drop to terminal and launch KDE from there? Any hints in the logs? Did you have KDE previously running with the current user (as in, is there already a full KDE config hidden in your /home/$USER somewhere).
No errors during installed. The configured repos are KDE and pacman and openSUSE 12.1 OSS. On login screen I see couple of options: Gnome IceWM KDE Workspaces KDE Workspace TWM Donno wky KDE is twice. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/p480x480/395479_1015050596263...
