No, but I doubt it. I do *have* the links and still the problem.
There has been a lot of chatter on Arch about the recent approach being to no longer create any dev links and to handle it via udev rules or have the end-user create only the specific links required. IIRC this was driven by the kernel folks for security purposes.
I haven't tried 12.1 yet, so I haven't tested, but if the new release is following this approach, that may explain at least part of the problem mounting removable devices.
Stephen, you may also want to open an xterm and see what the /var/log/message output is on device insertion. If you can determine (or set in preference) what /dev/dvd... is being looked for, you can then create the link to sr0 (i.e.: ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd) or whatever it is looking for.
