I apologize if this was brought up in another location, but I recently upgraded my 11.4 openSUSE box with 12.1 via the zypper command line.
I can now only enter openSUSE 12.1 via the emergency log-in using the root password.
I think my main question is: how do I get back into normal mode? What type of info can I give you guys over the mailing list to help you help me?
It seems something may have changed your default runlevel. Try adding a 5 to the Grub kernel line when next you boot. If that does the trick, try fixing it up to be the default using YaST. Before rebooting, try 'telinit 5' (or whatever its systemd equivalent is) from a root login. If that fails, something about your default X DTE may be incompletely upgraded, and could possibly be fixed by ensuring all of /etc/zypp/repos.d/ point to the right 12.1 places (your favorite plain text editor, or the editor built into MC), then 'zypper ref; zypper dup', then try again. If none of the above works, try 'zypper in sysvinit-init' and then rebooting. Also look in /var/log/boot.msg and /var/log/Xorg.0.log for clues to something failing. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
