Go to runlevel 1 using
init 1
and then type
X -configure
The x server will create you a xorg.conf corresponding to the automagic guess and then you can try to modify that xorg.conf file. Remember to put it as always to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
And perhaps reuse some lines from the old one, like monitor class and modelines. I think that if it is not using the correct resolution it is because it thinks the monitor doesn't have it, and it is guessing wrong. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
