As "average Joe user" is definitely not what it was before the influx of
gui users, this is a true statement. Mutt appeals more to those who want
"control" of their reader.

Mutt is a *text* mail reader, not a "web page" reader, and as such
appeals more to keyboard users than gui/mouse-click-click users.
Remember when the mouse was just for games?

If mutt were able to use inotify instead, it would be better ;)

possibly, depending on individual situations.
