Since upgrading to KDE 4.4.x a while ago I have had application icons disappearing from the Panel during further incremental updates using yast2. This happens in both openSUSE 11.2 and 11.1 installations but also in Fedora 12 and yum on this same (desktop) machine; so it could be a KDE issue rather than an openSUSE issue.

I'd be very surprised if package upgrades were messing with your personal configuration files, but this would give you an idea of what was going on.

For info, I filed a bug. Turns out it's a known issue, with expectations of a fix in 4.4.2. Meantime a suggested workaround is to lock the widgets. In my case this seems to work.
