Since upgrading to KDE 4.4.x a while ago I have had application icons disappearing from the Panel during further incremental updates using yast2. This happens in both openSUSE 11.2 and 11.1 installations but also in Fedora 12 and yum on this same (desktop) machine; so it could be a KDE issue rather than an openSUSE issue.
What happens is that at some point during regular update processing, certain icons vanish from the Panel. Only some of them are affected, but it's always the same ones - for example konsole or knode. By watching the yast2 progress window carefully I see that they vanish during the processing of kdebase4-workspace updates; but there's at least one other culprit which I haven't so far been able to catch at it.
When it happens I have to replace the app icons manually. Things then remain stable until the next update when it happens over again. This has been going on ever since 4.4 came out a few weeks ago.
I haven't got around to reporting it as a bug because I'm not yet sure what to point the finger at. Meantime, has anyone else seen anything like this?
Robin K Wellington, NZ I have the same issue with Kontact icon vanishing from the panel. I think it happens when Kontact is being updated. As i'm updating from Factory i live with it as it's a development version.

Thanks. Since all of the KDE 4.4 SC stuff comes from Factory I'd had similar thoughts (and patience). And as I said, I can watch it happen and nail at least kdebase4-workplace updates as a culprit, circumstantially anyway. But that doesn't tell me why!
