Hello list mates,
Recently, I have been seeing the following log entries from smartd: Oct 7 10:07:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], SMART Prefailure Attribute: 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate changed from 107 to 105 Oct 7 10:07:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 187 Reported_Uncorrect changed from 32 to 26 Oct 7 10:07:57 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], ATA error count increased from 68 to 74 Oct 7 10:37:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 2 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors Oct 7 10:37:56 zaphod smartd[4623]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 2 Offline uncorrectable sectors
Especially the last two lines worry me. However, Googling tells me that it's not really an issue and that the two pending sectors should be remapped when the system does another read of the sector.
Smartctl after a long test tells me the disk passes the test, so a failure is not imminent. The disk is about a year old now.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Similarly to what others have suggested, go and order replacement disks! I had similar issues with a bunch of 1TB disks (I don't want to be officially blamed by the company, so I'm not going to disclose them here, but it's a company from Korea starting with an S...) - I wanted to get 4 new disks, including all the failing disks, I had 14! disks in the end which I had to test myself and manage returning the failing ones... If you don't mind, I'd like to know what kind of model your failing one is; if you don't want to be explicit (like I didn't want to be), just find a smart description, like I did ;-) FWIW, I'm not going to buy any new HD from the not named company!
Thanks in advance,
Joop
