I have an old note which states, in my shorthand :-) , "mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdd1; system will be checked every 20 mounts or 180 days; use tune2fs -c or -i to override".

No flame intended - but - that is why I love the reiserfs - it checks every time you boot and/or crash.
Verner was trying to at minimise the checks or get rid of them completely- and not have them performed at each boot :-) .
