a dirty mouse.
It's an optical mouse.
dirt may affect optical sensors
And cat hairs (speaking from experience <g>).
My experience is the older LED-based optical mice (usually very bright) are not susceptible to cat hair while the newer, low-power laser-based optical mice (some of them so low-power that it's hard to see the light at all, even when it _is_ in the visible spectrum) completely wig out if their's a cat (or other fine) hair in the aperture of the mouse.
