I download the tar file and then sh freemind.sh. I have the 0.9 beta 20 installed and works ok. They are beta so some of the releases complain about the openjava and some not.

Low, if you have the rpm it is OK what you do but, often the freemind betas are not as rpm. OTOH freemind is java program so you do not need to compile it, you just can run it from the last beta. In some cases the path for the different version of jvm are not the same and you have to adjust it to run it.
