Thanks for the reply, Sven. These are questions that will hope help me get my head around the new changes. On Friday 30 January 2009 07:44:31 Sven Burmeister wrote:

Now seems like a daft question but i still haven't yet got my head around KDE4... When i add an icon to the desktop (e.g. right click on a menu entry and then select "add to desktop", should this icon appear in my folder view as well as the desktop? It only appears on the desktop outside the folder view and a ".desktop" is not created in "/home/<user>/Desktop"
Seems like you gave the answer already yourself. The folderview shows files from a folder. I understood the folder view concept okay.
Adding something to the desktop is not copying files. Otherwise, if you added some other plasmoid, e.g. a note, it would have to be copied to that folder too, which does not make sense. Yes, but it's confusing to be able to mix the 2 environments. Where are the new desktop icons stored?
Taking this even further, people that have more than one project they work on an hence more than one folder-view on the desktop, would get a copy in each of those folder. If they had more than one folder view then I am assuming they would not not be pointing to "/home/<user>/Desktop", they would be pointing to other folders. The desktop icons would only go into "/home/<user>/Desktop" which i hope is a unique folder in the users home directory. Are there potentially multiple plasma Desktop folders that could hold desktop icons for each different desktop (containment??) within one users home directory?
The folder shown being called "Desktop" is just due to the old way, it could be called "Default Links" instead. One solution could be that the folder view should not allow "Desktop Folder" when the screen is set to "Desktop" or if KDE4 is updating a KDE3 environment then it should move the old ".desktop" files to the new format and then remove "/home/<user>/Desktop" folder. Then again, i don't know enough about KDE4 yet so i do understand that i might be talking out of the orifice i should be sitting on.
