What version of VMWare?

VMware-server-1.0.8-126538, which is the latest of the 1.x series.

Just out of curiosity - have you tried any other guest OS? You said you
have Windows guest - what version? 3.x, 9x, NT/2k/XP/Vista/7.x?

Windows Me, and two copies of MsDos, I think. All work correctly, so far.

I have been told to try "xev", to see the output of the keys. Another sugestion to restore keyboard is "setxkbmap" without parameters. I'll try them later, I have to run some errands now.
