There was no such menu. I got what I believe was gdm.
I'm now doing my third ab-inito install. This time I didn't change anything about what software to install after selecting KDE 3.5.
This one worked. I have my beloved KDE 3.5, thank god. I don't know what the hell is going on, but there's some kind of interaction between the package patterns and the preferred desktop that is most unwelcome.
