HI, I have the following PCI wireless adapter reported via YAST:- AR5212/AR5213 Multiprotocol MAC/baseband processor Under hardware it shows 2 module options ath5k or ath_pci - which one should I use? Under wireless Device Settings: MY hub provider advises an operating mode of Infrastructure - selectable are Managed, Master or Ad-hoc - which should I use? My hub provider recommends using WPA-PSK and has provided a wireless key (10 characters, looks hexadecimal). When I enter this in the Encryption key and select Hexadecimal an error pops up saying the key must have 64 hexadecimal digits - should I select passphrase? The hub provider mentions the encryption type should be AES or TKIP - is it possible to set this anywhere?
Further info: I'm running Linux 2.6.25.18-0.2-default #1 SMP 2008-10-21 16:30:26 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux OpenSUSE 11.0
Any help appreciated.
Thanks Phil
Ad hoc is the type of connection you'd use, if directly connecting computer to computer, without the use of an access point. I'm not sure what's referred to by managed or master. The best encryption to use is WPA2, with WPA a close second. Do not use WEP, if you can avoid it, as it's easily broken. Many access points & wireless routers can be configured to allow both WPA & WPA2 connections, which you'd need if some of your computers do not support WPA2. You'd normally use PSK (pre shared key) in home or small office installations. Otherwise you'd need a RADIUS server, which most people don't have. I use www.grc.com to generate my keys (click on Services > Perfect passwords). It gives a 63 random character string, which would be somewhat difficult for someone to guess. ;-) OpenSUSE supports WPA2, but older hardware may not. XP requires SP3 to use WPA2. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
