How about simply remounting?
mount -o remount,noacl /home
I just tried the noacl bit on my home partition and nothing came crashing down. Don't know about over ssh, but I would guess it should work.

I guess the mount remount is the key to keeping the filesystem from complaining about the pending unmount when files are open.
