Adam,
The 8.9 driver (Version 8.532) has been a very solid driver, and in my opinion, the best release yet. The openSuSE repositories currently have the 8.8 driver (Version 8.522) which was also a solid driver. For reasons I don't yet understand, the 8.10 driver (Version 8.542) runs slow. It runs fine, works with Compiz fine, it is just slow. If you want to try the driver from ATI, I suggest you download the 8.9 driver which is:
By biggest problem is with the 8.8 driver, installed via RPM from the repo, is with openGL screen savers in KDE 4.1.x they are distorted and freezes up my screen when I move the mouse or hit a key to clear the screen saver. Here is some pictures to show what I am talking about:

If this is still a problem with the 8.9 and above drivers then there is not point in my upgrading. Also how are would it be to go from the RPM driver to that driver I wonder.
Thanks for your reply
Adam, In short, "dunno?" It would be worth a try. The ATI driver has come a long way since 8.4. The new driver install takes about 3 minutes. So, you have nothing to lose in trying the upgrade. P.S. Your experience is just another reason why I still run kde 3.5.9. Let us all pray it is usable in 11.1. As delivered with 11.0, it was more of a bad joke than a desktop.... -- David C.
