Thanks for volunteering your machine for the tests. ;-) I know I am getting pissed about the driver in the SUSE repo and I am waiting for good reason install the driver with ATIs .run file, I guess this is not it.
Adam, The 8.9 driver (Version 8.532) has been a very solid driver, and in my opinion, the best release yet. The openSuSE repositories currently have the 8.8 driver (Version 8.522) which was also a solid driver. For reasons I don't yet understand, the 8.10 driver (Version 8.542) runs slow. It runs fine, works with Compiz fine, it is just slow. If you want to try the driver from ATI, I suggest you download the 8.9 driver which is: ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run You can download it at: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/previous/linux64-rf-cat89.html You can get any of the drivers (7.11 - 8.10) from: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/linux64/radeonprevious-linux64.html Though the link says 'linux64', the drivers are for both i386 and x86_64. For install instructions see: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/ati/ati_quick-reference The quick reference also contains a link to a script that will automate most of the driver install for you.
