The point is to check for update only 1 or 2 package management related. Any other will make YOU (YaST Online Update) chase his tail.
BTW, I agree with Silviu, that few recent problems (zypper and/or Network Manager) repelled for sure a bunch of people that would otherwise use openSUSE.
IIRC the manual version of yast online update (not the applet version) updates the package managements first and then restarts to complete the other pending updates. Maybe the applet version was the root cause of the problem, I have only ever used it as an indicator.
