.. in that add-on you can easily configure an external program that plays for example those .asx and .asf files. The best one I have found (that understands each and every format and every web-page) is kmplayer.
Errr.. KMplayer uses either MPlayer or Xine as it's backend... So... if you were having problems with the mplayer-plugin but kmplayer worked, then I'm guessing that you didn't have the w32codecs installed, and that KMPlayer was configured to use Xine and Gstreamer... or something along those lines. In my experience, MPlayer and the w32codecs will play everything except DRMed video - just as well as Xine will.
