Is there a GUI ssh client I can use? On Windows I use putty. I constantly have to use SSH tunneling and I know it can be done in the commandline but I prefer to use GUI client.
While several have provided options for GUI clients including putty &c, another option would be to put the forwarding information in ~/.ssh/ config - that's how I avoid having to put the forwarding info on the command-line. If you have standard port forwarding you use for systems, that's the easiest way I've found that doesn't involve the installation of extra software. For example: --- snip --- Host HostAlias Hostname 1.2.3.4 Protocol 2 ForwardX11 yes Compression yes LocalForward 5910 localhost:5900 LocalForward 5911 localhost:5901 User myusername --- snip ---
From the CLI, if I invoke ssh as follows:
ssh HostAlias I'll be connected to 1.2.3.4 as user myusername; the connection is made using SSHv2 and compression enabled, with X11 forwarded and local ports 5910 and 5911 forwarded to the remote machine (the hostname part there is relative to the remote machine, not the local machine) on ports 5900 and 5901. This gives me (from the local machine) the ability to connect to the VNC server on 1.2.3.4 using the command vncviewer localhost:10 And have the connection encrypted. HTH.
