When using the command "sudo" I don't get any auto-completion of the application I am trying to run. For example, when using "sudo make" I could type "un" and hit the TAB key after which Ubuntu would complete the world "uninstall". This doesn't seem to work
You need the package "bash-completion" for this, it's not installed by default in opensuse 11. I'm not using it so I don't know whether you have to make the completion sudo-aware (which shouldn't be a big deal).
with OpenSuse. Is this a known issue/design choice/implementation choice or is it a bug? I also don't seem to be able to run "Gedit" via "sudo". When I run "sudo gedit" it gives me an application not found (or not configured, I can't exactly remember or test at the
With opensuse root's $PATH is rather basic (or "specific") in comparison to a user's $PATH. Makes some sense, too. I guess Ubuntu is a tad more lax there, which, on some systems, makes sense, too. You can run "sudo `which gedit`" and run into the X-Server denying access and fix that with "xhost +localhost" for the time being. Or extend root's $PATH. I'd be interested to know how people who know better do it: Given root occasionaly needs access to X. How to protect the X session and make root a happy customer at the same time?
