[opensuse] What difference does a vanilla kernel make

Hi List, I am working on a bug which entails loading a vanilla kernel. I am basically in the dark as to what effect this will have on my system. I tried a kernel.org kernel once with 10.3 and could not get it to work, I plan to install the 2.6.27-rc2 vanilla rpm. Any pitfalls to be expected?
