I have been running openSUSE 10.2 32bit, 10.3 32bit and 64bit, and now 11.0 64bit on a system at home since June of '07. First on an ASUS P5NSLI motherboard 2GB memory and Pentium D CPU with dual PNY NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GTs, Plextor PX-750A DVD writer(IDE), and 3 SATA hard disk drives. This system worked running 10.2 writing DVDs and CDs on the Plextor but was unable to read data DVDs on the Plextor in particular the 10.3 installation DVDs. I was able to barrow a SONY USB DVD writer and confirm that the DVDs written could be read. Later, because of this problem I replaced the Plextor DVD writer with a SONY DRU 840A(IDE). This relieved the DVD read issue which I attribute now to Plextor bad hardware (unconfirmed). 10.3 32bit could read and write DVDs and CDs data and video and audio just fine with k3b. 10.3 64bit could load k3b one time and write one CD (data or audio) or DVD (data) after boot. A second attempt to activate k3b results in a splash screen display for several minutes then a k3b starts the GUI with a message that no write device can be found on the system. Starting and stopping k3b without writing a disk seems to not cause the problem. Thinking that this was an issue with the i570 chip set on the P5NSLI moptherboard, and to improve the memory access bandwidth I replaced the P5NSLI with an MSI P6N Diamond and a new set of problems along with the old familiar one. The on board audio is the X-Fi Xtreme which may or may not have a driver available. I added an old PCI Sound blaster card and configured it and have good sound. 10.3 32bit can now read and write DVDs and CDs data and video and audio just fine with k3b. 10.3 64bit behaves the same as with the ASUS motherboard. The USB DVD writer still works fine. The SONY DRU 840A internal IDE DVD writer still works once. 11.0 64bit works just like 10.3 64bit with the exception that only TAO works with audio CDs. I have searched the forums and found references suggesting that pata_amd was at fault. I tried the badmodule= on 11.0. The module installed anyway (must be the only one). Must be working or it would never write the disks. The writing program is wodim. I also found suggestions about reading the release notes. I did. Found nothing. Am I the only person with this problem? Has everyone else moved to USB or SATA DVD writers? Is a hard drive on the IDE required for the PATA IDE driver to work? And I do thank all the contributers for the information I have found through these email postings. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
