IRC is useful for quick answers. It's like the friendly chat with the collegue in the next room. BUt it only really works with either people in the same timezone or in the times different time zones overlap. It's like conference calls across different time zones. Like you, I prefer email over irc, but (grudgingly :) had to admit that irc does have its uses. And using it is rather easy.
