Why did you install xampp ? I installed mysql, apache, php alone using the package manager and all works fine.
I was thinking of installing Joomla (content management system). Their instructions implied that it would be much easier to install Joomla using xampp. xampp docs also said that xampp had been tested with OpenSUSE. I anticipated about a 30 min install. Ha! FWIW, I've decided to restore the original OpenSUSE installation.
I've installed joomla, and it went perfectly on a server with the standard, suse supplied lamp stack. No need to muddy the waters with some random tarball which was meant for OSes that don't already provide all those things.
