The down-sides are the lingering browser incompatibilities and their so-far relatively impoverished and problematic UI programming capabilities, but these are getting better.
I think you're going to have to make your peace with browser-based interfaces (BBIs), because we're only going to be seeing more of them.
For java-script based stuff, maybe. For vmware Remote Console most of the above does not apply. And yet it is a browser plug-in in the vmware server 2 beta. I suspect I would far prefer the old interface. I don't know because I haven't been able to install it yet! (OK, I've only tried 4 machines so far. I'd try XP from my desktop machine, but it is a vmware instance so I can't get to it right now!!!
