I've looked in compat_kernel.h but can make no sense of it
Have you tried installing the latest any-any patch? It is available here: http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/ This has helped me in the past but may not apply to your situation.
Hello, I've opensuse 10.3 kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1 vmware-6.0.2 and no need for any patch. The modules compile without error. I add that I compiled the kernel from the sources.
