I'm using Radeon X1650 on the Desktop machine (Self build). For Radeon X1650, only the driver
ati-driver-installer-8.41.7-x86.x86_64.run
recognizes the video chip correctly, and enables 3D acceleration.
So, try with anothe driver from ATI's site.

ah-ha! found it. I was looking for SaX2 X11 config tool. Once I got this setup I was able to configure the ATI card and have now got 3D acelleration.
From the ATI site, stick with the 8.43 driver, the 8.44 driver fixes a SONAME problem, but the resolutions are hosed. 8.45 should be out soon. See:
