There is a comment in common-auth that says that you shouldn't edit it. It says it will get overwritten.
Really? In the past (and still today on SLES10) I've happily modified the pam's configuration files by hand. I think you can safely modify them.
common-auth looked like the logical suse counterpart to fedora's system-auth. Of course /etc/X11/xorg.conf says not to edit it and I have done so on several occasions without an issue. Maybe using the syntax modeled in those HowTo's in common-auth will do the trick.
