This is a persistent phenomenon, now? Or could it be that the X server, for some reason, thinks one or more of your modifier keys is down? Also, you should clarify some things: Which desktop environment are you using? When you say "text" mode, do you mean a virtual console, or a shell running within a terminal emulator in a graphic desktop environment (or both)?
