Anybody with Dell Inspiron 6400 + OpenSUSE 10.2 experience.
My default installation is causing lots of trouble. Frequent boot time hang (Primarily at "activating device mapper ...") and high frequency FireFox crashes (that's where I spend most of my time, so really "high frequency", definitely not usual for a stable release). Mostly FireFox stops responding and I need to kill it.
How're your temperatures? I don't have a Dell Inspiron, but I do have a Toshiba laptop in which I increased the RAM from the original 512 MB to 2 GB. I don't know if it's because of the increased memory or because it's a couple of years old and probably dusty inside, but now it often overheats.
The symptom in Linux is that everything becomes unresponsive except the mouse. However, I'm pretty sure what the problem is, because when the machine is booted to Windows XP and this happens, it simply shuts down.
It appears to be two different responses to the same situation, and the Linux response seems very much like what you're describing.

You may be interested in the fact that the New York State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has instituted suit against Dell for not fulfilling its obligations as to customer service, bait and switch schemes, and miscellaneous other crimes, after a tremendous group of customers complained, to Dell, and then to the AG, after having received no relief from Dell. This was on the news today, and is probably available on national news wires. --doug -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
