If I get the time and energy, I'll have a look into the PPD file, which I think is basically the same for the 4000 and the 4300/4400. I've been using a 4300 for a good five years and the 4400 for a good three years +/-.
I don't know if it is a ppd issue. I'd have to load up the scanned page to somewhere, so that you could better judge what the problem is. It is really difficult to put it into words. I'll try.

To Carlos and Mike-- Original reply deleted. I set up the printer in Yast, and I am definitely communicating with the HL-2040, but when I tell it to print a test page, whether text or graphic, it starts to eject all the papers in the tray, with nothing printed on them. When I got the printer, I ran the internal test routine, and it did pass that test by printing a page of text and some graduated gray-scales. It will still do that, so it _can_ print. Lacking some input from the list here, I will try their service email, and then I will call them up, if I have to. Thanx to all for their interest in helping out here. Suggestions? --doug
