[rest pruned] Anders, For weeks now I have been reading with astonishment but more with frustration the threads in this forum where the sources for updating SuSE 10.1 have been mentioned whether this be with YOU (or me) or rug (or carpet) or smart or apt, etc. There are zillions of sources being mentioned - or so it seems. The ones mentioned above - by Marc and you - both contain the word "suse" in the server names: "software.opensuse.org" and "ftp.suse.com". To me, and I am sure to many others in a similar situation as myself, having "suse" in the download server name indicates that whatever is at that site is a SuSE written and supported "product". If I go outside the "suse" realm - like, for example, ftp.kde.org or www.kernel.org or packman.links2linux.com - I know that I am on my own and if I download from there I am in the situation of "You pays your money and you takes your chances". At the same, there appears to be at least 1 URL which does not have "suse" in the server's name yet is recognised as having official SuSE supported updates available. This is http://packam.iu-bremen.de . All just a bit confusing overall. For the record -and I did put this question to this forum already, some weeks back - can you point me to a source which contains in a single, well explained, list stating which sources have to be used, and which must not be used or at least may be used but with strong provisos, to update SuSE 10.1? A list which shows that for YOU or apt or smart use the following sources, and if using smart then the TYPE is 'yast2' or 'rpm-sys' or 'rpm-md' or whatever. Back in the Days of Milk and Honey when we had a workable and sensible system called YOU installed with versions upto and including 10.0, the sources were automatically given to us, common garden-type, SuSE users. But now this is all gone, gone in a puff of somebody's petulance and wonky 'thinking'. The result has been shambles. Confusion and frustration are now rampart amongst the majority of the population. Is there a source of a list of the URLs/sources which clearly, precisely, and unambiguously states that for updating all the parts of SuSE 10.1 you use these sources, and that if you want to "takes your chances" then use the following sources? If there isn't shouldn't SuSE fianlly take some time out and prepare such a list(s)? And I do not mean the present list of sources and mirrors which is on the Novell site- this list is less than informative.
