I have been a bit taken aback by the news and mail traffic complaining about 10.1 and flat panels. Has anyone had success in setting up 10.1 to function with (1) a Dell Flat Panel and (2) a Dell Inspiron 8600?
I had a similar problem with SuSE 10.0, but I was able to get it working. Perhaps that info would be beneficial to someone. You can also search the archives (Dec 2005), where I gave a blow-by-blow account.
I have a Dell 9150 with 24" flat panel and an ATI X600 graphics card. SuSE 10.0 did *NOT* work out of the box. The setup was fine and the card/monitor was detected, but when I restarted all I got was a black screen. In fact, the whole system was frozen so I couldn't even switch to a tty.
I *did* get it to work, however. Here's how:
1. Use the rescue system to make Linux boot to command line mode, not X11. 2. Download the latest drivers from ATI and install them 3. Use the ATI installer (not YaST) to set up xorg.conf 4. Enjoy 10,500+ fps with glxgears
I suspect the same problem persists in SuSE 10.1.
I had this same flat panel working under 10.0. And eventually, I too installed the ATI drivers. But I downloaded all that stuff today and they claim it is for Xorg 6.8 and 10.1 is running Xorg 6.9 I may play with the ATI drivers, but I somehow think it is another goose chase until they come out with a new set of drivers. (The Xorg ATI RPM file won't even load due to dependencies.)
Hope this helps, Buddy Coffey Advanced Electromagnetics
