What can I do to get this working?
Here's an idea: If you boot the ncurses (text-based) installer, you have the ability to manually load kernel modules (drivers) for your network card/chip and various filesystems. Make sure you've got support for all the common filesystems loaded (VFAT, NTFS (r/o), EXT3 and ReiserFS) before starting the installation.
Another cause for the problem might be that your intervention with 'instlux' is 'confusing' the installer by presenting it with an unanticipated environment. As far as I know, you should have been able to perform the installation on the 'native' ... i.e. unmodified ... system.
hth & regards,
Thanks for this input. I have tried to load different file systems and
IDE/SATA drivers, but have not been able to make it work yet. Not to
much help by googling either.
It seems that Suse will work on the HP nx9420 laptop, by the information
on this site:

I will look into the possible instlux issue you mention, and see what I
can find there.
