Hello,
I'm really new to Linux and have just installed OpenSuse 10.1. Most of it seems to be working OK, but I can't get connected with my USB DSL modem. It's a Sagem eagle chipset based modem and I'm trying to connect to Tiscali broadband in the UK. I've installed the modem drivers and they seem to be working OK - the modem lights come on and the /var/log/messages entry seems OK (but i might not be interpreting it correctly). The KInternet log says this:
Derek, have you downloaded the data files (firmware) for your modem? You don't say what model you have but I have set up a friend's usb Sagem 800 modem for tiscali.co.uk and it works fine. This modem uses the kernel ueagle-atm module and needs the data containing the firmware to be installed. It is here:
http://eagle-usb.org/ueagle-atm/non-free/ueagle-data-1.1.tar.gz
Here's what I did:
As root
1. Create a new directory called "/usr/lib/ueagle-atm" 2. Copy all of the contents of the data file into the new directory 3. Ensure adsl modem is connected to phone line 4. Unplug adsl modem from usb port 5. Plug adsl modem back into usb port 6. Wait for modem lights to stop flashing. 7. Configure the adsl modem using YaST-->Network_Devices-->DSL
This is what I did: a) PPP Mode is PPP over ATM b) VPI/VCI is 0.38 for tiscali UK c) Device Activation is On Hotplug d) Add a new custom provider and fill in the details e) **Uncheck** "Always ask for password, and enter your password f) Check "External firewall" g) Set idle timeout to zero
At this point if you are not already on line (ifconfig will show dsl0), you can issue the command: ifup dsl0
My friend's system connects all by itself without the need for the ifup dsl0, no need for kinternet. I hope this helps.

Hi Geoff, Thanks for the reply. I'd done most of what you suggested, except I'd put the firmware into a different directory. So I've copied over to the directory you suggest. I hadn't unplugged the USB port previously: it's rather tricky to get at on my machine. Anyway, i tried that, but I don't think it made a lot of difference - the modem lights are lit anyway. (They weren't until I copied the firmware files into the right directory.) I'd already configured the interface as you suggest and rebooted several times. ifup dsl0 says that the interface is up, but when I do 'ifconfig dsl0' it says that it can't find the interface. ifconfig -a just gives two interfaces l0 and sit0, ifconfig on its own, just l0. Trying to get to any web page with Konkeror or Firefox just gives a Host not found error, and ping just says there is no network. So where do i go from here? -- -- With best regards, Derek Carr, Birmingham, UK http://alldruid.co.uk/
