Hi, I started to use lm_sensors to monitor my hardware. In particular, I want to monitor temperature and fan functionality. The system has an Intel D865GBF ATX Mainboard, with a Pentium 4 3 GHz processor, 800 MHz FSB, 1 MB Cache. sensors-detect went fine, it detected the LM85 sensor chip "lm85b-i2c-0-2e"; start of the lm_sensors service as well, then calling sensors got: CPU_Fan: 2669 RPM (min = 4000 RPM) ALARM fan2: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM) fan3: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM) fan4: 0 RPM (min = 0 RPM) CPU: +45 C (low = +10 C, high = +50 C) Board: +36 C (low = +10 C, high = +35 C) ALARM Remote: +37 C (low = +10 C, high = +35 C) ALARM Oops, obviouslsy too much alarms for my taste. ;-) So I learned that I have to configure /etc/sensors.cfg. The measured values itself are already suspect. My BIOS reports the CPU temperature to be 56°C, System Zone 1 as 40°C, and System Zone 2 as 45°C. (Wherever zone 1 and 2 are.) The CPU fan speed seems to be OK. That's my first question: Is it best practice to assume that the BIOS values are OK and that I shall add compute statements to increase the lm_sensors values to read like them? My second question: Where do I get proper config values for the limits and thresholds? I have already checked the lm_sensors site, googled around, and also checked this list's archive, but not with too much results. On the Intel site, I found specs for the P4, at http://support.intel.com/design/pentium4/datashts/298643.htm, they list the `chassis temperature' as between 5 and 70°C. I assume that may be the CPU min and max temperatures (temp1_min and temp1_max). There the in-let air temperature is also listed, as between 32 and 38°C, with an upper limit of 40°C. (The information refers to variable fan speeds at these temperatures.) That might be the `Board' temperature, but this doesn't seem to be proper values for temp2_min and temp2_max -- if the system has been down for some time, it will surely be below 32°. And my current zone1 and zone2 values from BIOS are both above 40°C... :-( The board documentation says that the operational environment must be between 0 and 75°C. I have found no information at all about fan speeds and what would be a proper minimal value. Is anyone on this list that uses lm_sensors successfully? Where did you get proper config values from? Any other tips how to configure lm_sensors? Joachim -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Joachim Schrod Email: jschrod@acm.org Roedermark, Germany
