Sounds like you got switched from kdm to gdm as login manager.
In Mandrake 2005 this apparent switch behavior is simulated when kdmrc is switched from "usetheme=no" to "usetheme=yes", but I don't know if 9.3 is cursed with this problem too. I haven't installed 9.3 yet.
Apparently SuSE did the same as Mandriva, but in different fashion.
