So what state is the machine in now? from you post I am wondering if it is a harddrive problem or video problem. Not necessarily hardware, but that does raise the question also, is this known good hardware? If you have been able to get through the installation, can you boot to init 3? (on the boot splash screen just type a 3 while the normal linux option is highlighted) If you were able to get through the install normally and not with safe mode, that might mean that some power management stuff is needed to be handled or you get problems. If this is the case you can do one or both of these. Disable power stuff in BIOS. Upgrade the BIOS. i have tried to install in safe mode but then everything freeze in yast while formating the harddisk instead.
