Quite right -- on my two laptops the lid button turns off the back light (as well as generating an ACPI interrupt), other laptops are likely to differ. But the original poster is advised that a large amount of heat is radiated through the keyboard, so even if he is able to turn off the bios reaction to a lid close, closing the lid while the computer continues to run will shorten the life of the LCD as well as risk overheating. (I lay a weight on my lid buttons to turn off the backlights instead of closing the lid.)
