AIUI, 32bit apps are generally fine on the 64bit OS. All the libraries they are linked against must also be 32bit, which may lead to some awkwardness or confusion. Of course, they run as 32bit so can't take advantage of the extra spondoolicks (in fact, some apps can run slower I believe.)
Yeah, some run slower, some actually run faster. One nice benefit is that, without recompling, the same 32bit code that could malloc up to about 2.8Gig on a 32bit install, will be able to malloc up to about 3.6Gig instead. About the same window you could get on a 32bit host if you applied those bigmem patches to the kernel. But for the most part, 32bit code runs just fine on the 64bit install. Just have to install all the basic 32bit libs... will likely run into issues now and then with things that were compiled on RH and linked against specific versions of libs instead of the default .so though.. we run into those a lot with the EDA apps we support. We're trying to get our linux compute farm to be like our solaris side eventually... all 64bit hosts, supporting both 32bit and 64bit tools. We're getting there. -- Mike Marion-Unix SysAdmin/Staff Engineer-http://www.qualcomm.com _Gina_: "Oh no, Debra, don't be bitter, surely with your ever growing collection of flesh mutilating silver appendages and your brand new neo-nazi boot camp makeover the boys will come a-runnin'!" - From _Empire Records_
