I had no end of trouble getting a sync with my Treo 600 under SuSE 9.2. I finally got an answer on how to get it working on the list, but then I discovered that it would only work one time after every reboot. So I gave up and tried Gentoo. After applying the same hint there as I used in SuSE -- a udev rule that turned out to have come from the Gentoo forums anyway -- it worked without a hitch. But there are things about Gentoo that make me a little nervous. Probably the biggest is that I want to run the same thing on my servers as my desktop, and Gentoo on servers seems... painful. Anyway. (Rant for another list, I suppose.) So I dutifully try the new 9.3 LiveCD, and, lo and behold, my Treo sync's! So I go through the hassle of installing 9.3 over Gentoo, and get all the patches applied, and all the recent supplements updated. I get all of my environment just about the way I like, and then I try to sync. I use Jpilot. I'm just doing a straight backup. And what do I get for all of this trouble? That's right: a hard lock up. Part-way through, it just locks up the machine. No ctrl-alt-delete. No ssh. So I think, hey, maybe it's a fluke, and just try it again. Same thing. (And, no, not on the same Palm database.) I've had more trouble getting a Palm device to sync with Linux over the years than anything else. And don't even get me started with how bad all of the programs to sync it with are. I really just want to sync with Evolution, but I guess putting memos in Evolution is the equivalent of brain surgery or something. After about 8 years of using Linux on "the desktop," I think I'm just about over it. I've beat my brains against the wall too hard, too many times. I've lost basically the whole weekend to this reinstall. (And to go back to Gentoo will take a week.) I don't think I'm asking for anything difficult here, folks. I just want what I've been able to have on Windows since my first Palm Pilot Pro 10 friggin' years ago: flawless sync'ing with a PIM. I know, I know: "code it yourself." Yeesh, dk
